I believe a purist will know a fake when he/she sees it. Which makes me wonder.if the car is fully restored as an SS and an expert cannot tell, then isn't it worth as much as a true SS anyway ? probably not, as documentation adds some value.Ĭars with varying degrees of restoration are being sold to buyers with varying degrees of knowledge every day ! If done correctly, you won't be able to tell. If there are no holes, then it's never had fender well moldings and it's not an SS.Īny restored car is suspect. If a restoration has been done, but the car is missing the wheel well moldings, then look for the screw holes in the fender lips. Take the plastic vent inside the door opening off and shine a flashlight inside the opening to see if there is any evidence of holes filled where the Malibu moldings would have attached. One place that is very difficult to smooth out or could just be overlooked is inside the quarter panel. Another place to look is inside the trunk on the sides of the quarter panels for evidence of filled holes where the "Malibu" emblems would have been next to the side marker bezels. But these are just tips on where to look. Of course the door could have been replaced. If you see any sign of grinding here, or an area that looks to have been welded, this would be suspect. They are in the front lower corner and the rear lower corner. It's real easy to open the doors and look for 2 holes that would have to be plugged when removing the moldings. The SS molding stops at the bottom of the grille. Sometimes the side moldings are all gone, but the "hockey stick" on the front of the fender will still be the full length to the wheel well. If you see any of these moldings still on the car, then it's most likely not an SS. (front of fender, behind the front wheel, on the door, in front of the rear wheel well and in back of the rear wheel well). A Malibu would have aluminum moldings all the way down the side of the body.
